Megadeth – Captive Honor

I took my Foreclosure of a Dream preset and tweaked it some more; mainly in the kick drum area.  I added an Ayotte Classic kick with no resonance head for a really deep punch.  It added an amazing deep element to my already stacked kick drum.  Because of this, I made this my default project file to start from.  I am super happy with all the elements of this kit, until I start tweaking again and find something new I like.  This is nothing like the Countdown to Extinction drum kit so keep that in mind.

Ghost – Hunter’s Moon

It’s nice to finally cover some Ghost songs again and this one was just fucking fantastic!  Featured in the ending credits of the new Halloween Kills movie, the song just has some great drumming elements that I could not pass up!

I started with my usual Ghost preset but found the snare was too loose and lower in tone, so I stole the snare I used on the Type O Negative cover as it was a more snappy crack to it.  The next hurdle was the use of high rack toms in the original song.  I imported the 8″x8″ & 8″x10″ Ayotte Maple rack toms found in the Rock Foundry SDX and tweaked them a bit with the ambience channels.  Finally, I think I found a ride cymbal that is my new favorite from the Drums of Destruction EZX -the Sabian 21″ AA Rock Ride!  I love this thing, just cuts right through the mix.  I also started using the 18″ Meinl Byzance china found in this same EZX because again, it’s just awesome sounding.

Thanks for checking it out!

Psychedelic Furs – Pretty In Pink

Huge fan of 80’s british new wave music and the Psychedelic Furs song Pretty In Pink was made famous by one of my favorite writter/directors of all time, John Hughes. Sadly John died at an early age but his taste of music in his movies was amazing.

I am pretty proud of this project as I came very close to the original sounding kit. I used the “Dense Metal” preset in The Rock Foundry SDX as the starting point. I then changed the hi-tom to one from The Rock Warehouse SDX…it’s not a great sounded tom buit it fit the bill perfectly for the one hit that uses it in the song. The reamining 3 toms, I pulled from the Darkness SDX which are showcased during the chorus segments. I layered the kick drum with one from The Rock Foundry and The Rock Warehouse.  All the crash & ride cymbals are from The Rock Foundry SDX while a China (not used) comes from the Drums of Destruction EZX and a splash (not used) from the Core SD3 Library.

Hope you guys enjoy it!

Ra – Broken Hearted Soul

Let’s travel back to 2002. Satellite radio started to become very popular and me being a tech guy, I had it in my car. I can’t remember the station name at the time but the channel number I think was 37. On came this band I never heard but the song was fucking killer; that band was Ra and the song was Do You Call My Name. They played this song quite frequently and it grew on me, so I bought their CD and I was mighty impressed. Every new Ra CD that came out I bought it and I loved every song on every CD. This drum cover comes from their Black Sun album which is the first track on the CD. It features this killer riff throughout the song and solid fucking drum groove! I did cut the acoustic flamingo beginning because it was too long for my video…

Quite a few changes to the typical preset on this one.  I used completely different set of toms by using the Yamaha Beech Customs from the SD3 core library for the rack toms and a DW Collectors Series floor tom from the Metal Foundry library.  Then I changed out crash cymbal #2 to a 16″ Zildjian K Crash.  Then the usual eq/mix changes…

Megadeth – High Speed Dirt

For this drum cover, we’re going to go back to Megadeth’s Countdown to Extinction album (because it’s probably one of their best) and cover the song High Speed Dirt. I’m kind of in a pattern here, redoing a lot of old drum covers I have done with my Roland TD-7 kit just because I was never fully happy with my playing and the sound. So I am making it right; plus I never video recorded most of them.

This kit preset is pretty much the exact same as the Type O Negative preset
